I’m a parent of a toddler, so I spend a lot of time on my feet chasing after this toddler. The season has us running everywhere, from the park to the pool, which means I need a trustworthy pair of safety shoes.hoes that don’t hurt my feet at the end of the day (especially since I flat foot). After browsing through many pairs of sneakers, I rediscovered a brand that was once beloved for its sparkly platform styles in the 90s: Skechers.
While Skechers still offers a plethora of fun and sparkly options for kids, the brand has undergone a design overhaul over the past decade, offering stylish orthopedic options for adults. As the Dynamight Slip-On Sneakers ($65)which I now swear to allow me to spend long days filled with walking, running and catching up with my lightning fast toddler.
These sneakers are truly one of the best purchases I’ve ever made, and as a fitness enthusiast, I’ve worn a lot sneakers. They’re lightweight, easy to put on, and comfortable enough to support my flat feet and aching heels after a day out as a mom.
What makes it a foot-friendly choice?
The insoles of these slip-on sneakers are made of memory foam, a polyurethane-based material. Memory foam can help provide comfort and support to foot areas as it molds to the shape of your foot. Since switching from flip flops to these slip-ons, I’ve noticed a lot less pain in my heels after a long day, and I credit the comfortable memory foam.
Totally flat shoes ~surprise~ aren’t the most supportive of your feet. “Everyone is born with a fat pad on the bottom of their foot — think of that chubby bottom part of a baby’s foot — but, over time, excessive use of ‘bad’ shoes wears it down,” Jackie Sutera, DPM, a New York-based podiatrist, once told us. She explained, “So while heels definitely do this to you, it may be more surprising to know that flats and sneakers with no support will cause that big pad to wear out so quickly.”
Ultimately, that’s why I had to forgo flip flops and go for a more athletic design – these sneakers have a small 1¼ inch heel to help maintain proper foot alignment and weight distribution. When I wear them, I can feel my arches lift and not sink in the middle, which means less tightness and tension by the time I get home.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantage: you can put them on in seconds.
These sneakers don’t take long to put on, which makes them just as practical as my fiduciary flip flops.
Advantage: They are super comfortable.
I wasn’t sure what I would think of slip-on sneakers – when I think about it, I have memories of Ked-era flat sneakers that didn’t really provide arch support. Not to mention that these fabrics were heavy and made me feel like I was wearing bricks around my feet.
Luckily, these slip-ons are just the opposite. The diamond-patterned mesh material is comfortably lightweight, and the memory foam insole is just enough to support my arches and heels, which made all the difference in my walking game.
Advantage: They are stylish and there is one for everyone.
I have the all black Skechers Dynamights, and what can I say? I love that they go with everything. If I’m going to a yoga class, ransacking the grocery store, or attending mommy and me at the library, they work. Whether I wear leggings, jeans or a sundress, they go well with everything, giving my uniform a sporty touch.
Disadvantage: Memory foam retains heat.
Memory foam tends to retain body heat, so you may notice a little more sweating than usual. Advice to the wise: wear socks if you sweat a lot.
All in all, these slip-on sneakers have been a lifesaver. And at $65 a pop, I can buy several and still be ready for a day of toddler adventures (without wanting to dip my feet in ice at the end of the day).
