When New York Pilates founder heather andersen teaches Pilates, she gives four to five classes in a row. She likes to wear makeup when she’s in front of a room full of people, but since she sweats with them, she needs products that will stay put and look fresh for hours. While powder makeup tends to have better longevity than cream products, Andersen hated these types of mattifying formulas. Luckily, she’s found the perfect sweat-wicking makeup that will keep her looking dewy and hydrated no matter how many boards she passes her clients through.
“My approach to makeup in general, at least for daytime makeup, is really understated,” says Andersen. “My vibe is just sunscreen, a little coverage and a little color. If I have powders on my skin, even like powder eyeshadow or powder blush, I just have it. feel like it just sits in my creases and makes my skin look dry and cakey, and I’ve always hated that. But if I have cream-based products on my skin, maybe I look a bit shiny, but I don’t look dry either.
The anchor of this understated, sweatproof makeup routine is the Ilia Super Tinted Skin Serum ($48). Andersen loves the feel on her dry to combination skin. “It’s SPF 40 and super hydrating,” says Andersen. “I like that it’s hydrating because I often feel like your skin is drying out while you’re wearing makeup all day.”
On days when she’s going to be out a lot, running from studio to studio, she catches the Undefined Beauty R&R Sun Serum ($28). “It’s SPF 50 and it’s swim and sweat resistant for 40 minutes,” says Andersen. “Obviously if I teach four or five classes in a row, it’s longer than that 40-minute period. But because it’s waterproof, it stays put.” She also loves the tone of it on her skin, which is a subtle beige to camouflage the white cast.
Then Andersen adds color. “The only reason I put other makeup on my face is because once you have that shade, you’re kind of one color,” Andersen explains. “I use the Nars Afterglow Lip Balm ($28). It’s just a lip balm and it’s really shiny and pretty. I just use it in two colors – I use one color on my lips and then a lighter color on my lids and cheeks.”
Finally, Andersen wraps her look with the Ilia Limitless Lash Lengthening Mascara ($28). “It’s not waterproof, but it seems to stay put, which I think is actually one of the most important things,” she says. “Because your mascara is the only thing that will give you away if you start sweating. It will come off your lashes and then end up on your cheeks, which is a real shame.”
