- Kevin Costner has some great career news to share.
- The 68-year-old actor is going to star in a western titled Horizon. And it’s a colossal undertaking.
- He told Variety that he plans to split the epic western into four films, filmed one after the other. “It’s all different movies that all connect, so you’re watching a saga of these stories happening,” he explained.
What if you quit cable TV’s most popular show in the same year that the same role wins you a Golden Globe? You better have a good reason. For Kevin Costnerit’s an epic western titled Horizon-which he hopes will rival the success of his other epic western franchise, Yellowstone.
How did Costner land here? For one thing, there was reportedly an ongoing behind-the-scenes battle of egos between Costner and Yellowstone designer Taylor Sheridan. Costner also reportedly promised Sheridan just a week of his time to finish filming the rest of season five.. The actor divided his professional duties between Yellowstone And Horizon, which may have affected his personal life. A source close to his wife, Christine Baumgartner, revealed in an interview with People that she filed for divorce from him after becoming “unhappy” with his work schedule. “Christine wants them to spend some family time at their Santa Barbara home,” the source said. “During filming, Kevin is not very present. His absence was very difficult for her.”
But Costner only doubled down Horizon since his departure Yellowstone. “I mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last home,” he said. Deadline in a joint interview with director Francis Ford Coppola. “I did it without thinking. This sent my accountant into a fucking conniving fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.” Costner also recalled that critics called dance with wolves “Kevin’s Gate,” at the time, “even though they didn’t know I put all my money into this thing, and I actually got three other directors to direct it before me.”
Horizon is no small feat, however. Last June, he told Variety that he plans to split the epic western into four films, filmed back-to-back. “Four different films,” he confirmed, which will be released “about every three months” after the first one. he explained.
Horizon will star Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Luke Wilson and Thomas Hayden Church. The story will cover a 15-year period around the American Civil War, covering Western expansion and the abuse of Native Americans. Filming for the first part reportedly wrapped in November 2022, with the second being greenlit and completed in April 2023. The four-movie franchise doesn’t yet have a release date, but as nothing can come out until Costner hasn’t finished every movie, it’s probably a long, long road ahead of us.
“I’m not a gamer,” Costner said Deadline. “People might look at this and say, Oh it’s a bet. And I will, Well, I guess so, but do I want to go to Vegas and gamble? No. I’m not that kind of player. I bet on the love of history. I bet on people, in a way. I can’t get them to go to the theatre, but if they do, I’ll try to take care of them as best I can.”
