Earlier this month, Alaska Airlines launched a promotion to earn Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) by paying with your Alaska Airlines Visa credit card. In case you missed it, here are the details.
Alaska Airlines awards 2,000 Elite qualifying miles for every $10,000 spent with Alaska Airlines credit cards. On the face of it, this doesn’t seem like a big deal, especially compared to previous “step up to elite” promotions. Before Covid, Alaska Airlines never credited Elite qualifying miles for credit card spending. During Covid, the airline launched two “slide to elite status” promotions that were very lucrative. It was another day when airlines struggled to fill their planes with fare-paying passengers. This promotion runs from May 1 to November 30, 2023.
Is it a good deal
At first glance, the promotion doesn’t seem to pay well. However, Alaska Airlines really doesn’t need to run a promotion since their planes are flying at full capacity with long waiting lists at the gate. This promotion is for customers who might find themselves a bit short of status qualification at the end of the year. For these people, this promotion can be a lifesaver. What Alaska Airlines fails to mention in the promotion details is that there is no cap on this offer. I called customer service and asked the agent. She said there is no cap, so you can browse this program as many times as you want until the promotion ends on November 30, 2023. Unlike previous promotions, if you have multiple Alaska Airlines Visa credit cards, purchases made on those cards will be aggregated for this bonus. See terms and conditions below.
You must register for this promotion
To participate in this promotion, you must first Register here. Even though the program ends on November 30, your deadline to register is June 30, 2023. The promotion will make your pre-registration purchases count. If you register on May 31, your credit card purchases from May 1, 2023 will be taken into account. If you wait until the June 30 deadline to register, your credit card purchases from June 1 will be taken into account.
Trust but verify
Usually, Alaska Airlines will send you an email confirmation when you sign up for a promotion. Neither my wife nor I received an acknowledgment from Alaska Airlines that we were checked in. The webpage told me I was registered after I clicked submit. I called Alaska Airlines customer service to verify that we were checked in, we were.
Terms and conditions
What would a good promotion be without the usual terms and conditions page? Please understand that these elite qualifying miles are exactly that. You will not be able to spend these miles on an award ticket. These elite qualifying miles are only meant to help you qualify for elite status if you are a bit short. Here are the rest of the terms and conditions:
Improvements to the Alaska Airlines Visa Credit Card
Pay rates and benefits for the Alaska Airlines Visa Credit Card have improved with changes that took effect earlier this year. You can read more about these improvements here.
This promotion is not the best credit card spending offer, but it will help the people it was designed for, those who are close to an elite level at the end of the year. remember that these miles are reserved for elite qualifications and are not redeemable for award tickets. Alaska has made an improvement by allowing customers to consolidate credit card spending across multiple Alaska Airlines Visa credit cards. There is no cap on this offer, so keep spending. We’re getting a new roof over our new week home – “cha-ching”!
