It’s before dawn on a flight to Amsterdam, and a group of men in bachelor parties are pounding beers, dressed in Bavarian bartender costumes and talking loudly about visiting the red-light district without their partners knowing. . This is not the vision of Amsterdam that city officials want.
During the pandemic, Amsterdam got to see what the city was like without tourists of that ilk, and he doesn’t want to go back. Some city officials have proposed a “discouragement” advertising campaign for international visitors intending to “go wild” in the city. Other ideas: earlier closing times for bars and clubs; a prolonged ban on group visits; new Airbnb restrictions as well as a tightening of river cruises, ocean cruise ships and economy flights; and marijuana-free zones, tied to an existing downtown alcohol ban. They still want tourists, but for culture, not just cannabis cafes.
